Aspiration Pneumonia

If aspiration is suspected or witnessed:

  1. Watch and wait for 48 hours, can present as pneumonitis where antibiotic treatment is not warranted
  2. If signs of infection, target pathogens as you would for typical community acquired pneumonia
  •   Empiric regimens:  ceftriaxone if IV, amoxicillin/clavulanate if PO

No anaerobic coverage is required unless patient has risk factors such as poor dentition, putrid sputum, or evidence of necrotizing pneumonia or lung abscess on chest radiographs.
