AECOPD Diagnostic Parameters

Definition

Patient with history of COPD and is experiencing a sustained worsening of dyspnea, cough, and sputum production.

Clinical Criteria

Two or more of the following:

  • Increased sputum volume
  • Increased sputum purulence
  • Increased dyspnea

Note that majority of acute exacerbations are viral in origin and do not require antibiotic therapy.

Common Pathogens

Streptococcus pneumonia, Mycoplasma pneumonia, Haemophilus influenza, respiratory viruses
